Our People

Our History

SPMI employs a staff of professionals who have many years of experience and training in their areas of expertise. The staff at SPMI is composed of CPA’s, accountants, SPHR’s, PHR’s, Insurance Specialist, many Master and Bachelor Degrees and even a Doctorate Degree. Over the years the staff has continued to attend continuing education classes to keep them informed of the most current laws and trends in human resources, accounting, OSHA, benefits administration and other miscellaneous employer/employee issues.

Meet our Owners/Administrators

Clifford N. Lyon, President/CEO/CPA provides executive leadership to SPMI. He has a Master of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Arkansas and a Master Degree in Music from Emporia (Kansas) State University. Clifford is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Clifford is also a licensed insurance agent with the State of Arkansas.

Meet our Owners/Administrators

John W. Lyon, CFO/CPA devotes his time to the financial affairs of SPMI. He has an MBA from the University of Arkansas. John is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a Boy Scout Leader and member of Wood Badge SR-374. In 2003 he was honored as the Troop Leader of the Year, Butterfield Trail District of Arkansas. John is also a member of American Legion Post 31. John oversees the Payroll and Accounting Departments, along with all fiduciary responsibility for SPMI operations. John is an owner and partner of a certified public accounting firm in Van Buren, Arkansas.

Meet our Human Resource Professionals

Tammy S. Barthel, M.A., SPHR, Human Resource Director provides organizational leadership to SPMI. She has a dual Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Development and Management from Webster University, Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of the Ozarks, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management from the College of the Ozarks. Tammy has earned the SPHR Certification in Human Resources in addition to being an Arkansas licensed insurance agent and Notary Public. Tammy is a member of National SHRM as well as the local chapter of WAHRA.

Meet our Human Resource Professionals

Bethany L. Taylor, M.A., SPHR, CELS Human Resource Assistant Director. She has a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Development, a B.S. Ed. in Human Resource Development, and is a licensed insurance agent with the State of Arkansas. Bethany is also a Certified Employment Law Specialist, certified 401(k) Plan Administrator and Senior Professional in Human Resouces (SPHR). She is a memeber of National SHRM, local chapter of WAHRA, and Phi Theta Kappa.

Meet our Human Resource Professionals

Jon L. Woodham, M.A., PHR, CABM Human Resource Administrator. He has a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Development from Webster University. He is a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR), a certified Business Manager (CABM), certified in Employment Law, a certified I-9 Specialist, and holds a "Train-the-Trainer" certification from OSHA. Also a certified mediator for the United States Air Force, Department of Defense, and a member of the 188 Fighter Wing, Arkansas Air National Guard and volunteers with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). He is a member of National SHRM and the local chapter of WAHRA.

Meet our Client Resource Manager

Ken Summerhill, provides our clients with the information and support needed to complete Workers Compensation and Liability audits, special reports and employee data for all payroll related applications. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Economics from Arkansas Tech University, fulfilled the requirements of the Basic Trust School from the University of Central Arkansas and Certification from the American Institute of Banking. He has continuing education in Management and the Dale Carnegie Course.

Meet our Safety & Risk Management Specialists

Rick Small – Loss Control Specialist, has seven years of experience in worker’s compensation claims management. He is involved with all aspects of w/c claims from directing medical treatment to implementing a return to work program. He also assists in compliance of federal and state regulations, including OSHA recordkeeping and jobsite posting requirements.

Benefits Administration

Daniela Romero, PHR, Daniela holds a B.S. degree in business administration from Humboldt State University (California) and is certified as a professional in human resources management. Daniela is also a licensed insurance agent with the State of Arkansas. Daniela is a member of the Human Resource Management Society (SHRM) and Western Arkansas Human Resource Association (WAHRA).

Meet our Safety & Risk Management Specialists

Dr. Thomas Wazelle, Jr., Ed.D., CSP, PHR, APSS, is SPMI's Director of Risk Management. Tom has a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Arkansas, and a M.A. in Human Resources Development from Webster University. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Approved Professional Safety Source (APSS), and Authorized OSHA Trainer. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Western Arkansas Human Resource Association, the River City Safety and Environmental Council, MENSA, is and a licensed insurance agent for the State of Arkansas.
